Trip Details

Dolomite multiday Via Ferrata

Slovenia - 12day trip, initial concepts, to include points of interest and 5day Triglav Expedition.

Dolomites - Now here lies my passion. Since 2004 I have skied during winter and walked many of the trails during the summer months. Not least the challenge of their notoriously exposed Via Ferrata climbs. This is a truly fascinating region of Northern Italy, with beautiful scenery and an ambience second to none. Underlying is the realization that the 3,000m peaks of the area formed the front line during World War One. I wonder how many in the UK realize the extent of that conflict, and that regions other than France suffered badly. When attuned, there is hardly a view or a walk that does not show signs of warfare. Trench systems were often dug in the limestone type rock and consequently are still evident today. Many vantage points were obtained by tunneling, often still accessible today. Italians and Austro Hungarian forces lived and fought this 40Km section of the front, often at altitude, from the Glacier of the Marmolada in the east to Misurina in the West, during October 1915 through to November 1917. The conflict is well documented, web searches return fascinating articles, many in English. Reading is one thing, to experience the location is another, this brings me to my point. I am available to take groups, on multi day trips to the location in late June, July and September each year to walk the trails, climb the Ferrata and unravel what went on there. Organization of flight, food and accommodation is all in. This will be a walkers holiday, staying at Alpine huts. A degree of fitness is required, as is suitable walking equipment. If this trip interests you then drop me a line mailto:Dolomites@Dyche.biz to arrange suitable dates, areas of special interest and prices.
